The Avebury stone circle is a very large and very impressive stone circle located in the village of Avebury.  One thing is for certain - if you ever go visit Avebury, you will not have any trouble finding the stones as they run right through the village!  In fact they cover 28 acres in total, though only 27 out of the original 100 stones now remain.  This is because many of them were destroyed in the 14th and 17th centuries.  The circle (in fact it is an outer circle with two inner circles) was thought to have been built around 2700 BC.

The stones are quite an attraction.  There is a path that takes you around all of the stones

Some of the stones are very big, several tens of tonnes in weight.

You can see here some idea of the area which the stones cover

Everywhere you look in Avebury there are stones!

The ditch (henge) seen here forms part of the monument
