Barbury Castle is not really a castle as such - rather, it is the remains of an Iron Age hill fort on top of Barbury Hill in Wiltshire.  Only the earthworks remain now.  The Castle lies just off the Ridgeway and the area was first occupied some 2500 years ago.  The castle itself was built in the 6th century BC by the Celts as a refuge against warring tribes.  In times of danger, the local people would bring their animals and possessions and shelter in the fort.

At the site one can still detect a fair amount of structure.

You can just see in the background how commanding the view is from the castle's location

The location of the castle (on the Ridgeway) is perfect for serious walkers or just sight-seers

I'm sure our distant relatives would have felt quite safe from their enemies up here!
