West Kennet Long Barrow is a Neolithic burial mound located a few miles from the Avebury stone circle, and forms part of the so-called "Avebury complex".  The barrow dates back around 5500 years and was in use for around 1000 years.  The barrow itself is around 100 m long and excavations have shown that it was used as a communal tomb in which around 50 people were buried in total.  About 4000 years ago, the tomb was filled in and the entrance blocked.
