Old Sarum is a hill fort located just north of Salisbury.  It was created about 5000 years ago and in fact served numerous purposes for different groups down the years.  These include being a British earthwork fort, a Roman outpost, a Saxon town, and a Norman fortress.  The Doomsday Book was partly written at Old Sarum.  Interestingly, there was a cathedral at Old Sarum, but it was knocked down and the stones re-used in the new Salisbury!  Because of its location on a hill, you get lovely views of Salisbury and Salisbury plain from Old Sarum.
