( HomePhotos → Waylands Smithy )

Wayland's Smithy is located about a mile from the Uffington white horse, and can easily be reached along the Ridgeway from the horse.  Wayland's Smithy is a burial chamber - in fact two chambers, one built in about 5500 BC and a second one in around 3300 BC.  The later one lies on top of the earlier one.  The name Wayland's Smithy was given much later on by Saxon settlers who assumed the chamber was the work of one of their gods, Wayland the Smith.

Wayland's Smithy is located within this group of trees.
