Thornton Watlass is a small village in North Yorkshire, a few miles from the town of Masham.  The population is about 200 people, and when I was there in December 2007 I witnessed one of the more bizarre things I've ever seen in this country - a cricket game being played in the middle of winter, on a freezing cold day!  It was for charity, so may be not so eccentric ...

Thornton Watlass - and the green on which the cricket game was played

The church is nearly 1,000 years old

Some very comfortable houses and cottages here

The surrounding countryside is not spectacular, but is good for walking
