In November 2011 I rented this Renault Megane Coupe while my own car was having some repair work done to it.  The Renault was a stylish and comfortable car, but nothing special on the road and in 1.6 litre petrol form, could have used a bit more muscle under the bonnet.

The Megane coupe that I had was equipped with the 1.6 litre petrol engine, which puts out around 105 BHP maximum.  This means that the car is quite driveable in every day driving, but feels a bit short of oomph when you need to crack on or overtake.  The engine has a good linear response but could certainly use more torque so that overtaking isn't too nerve-wracking an affair.  Admittedly I am used to a 3-litre Audi, but I still think the performance of the Megane was not that great.

The Megane was stylish in looks and felt solidly built.  The car had 31,000 miles on the clock but there were no squeaks or rattles inside.  The seats were very comfortable for me, and there was plenty of space, at least in the front of the car.  I had mixed view on the dashboard.  Though tricky to see in the photo below, the speedometer and minor gauges were digital (in the centre dial below).  Personally I prefer analogue instruments but I would have got used to the digital ones over time.

The Megane had nice light steering and a comfortable ride over the fairly poor road surfaces on the country roads near where I live.  I didn't test the car at full tilt around the bends, but it felt sure-footed on the road.  the fuel consumption was disappointing - only 34 MPG overall and that was with mostly gentle driving.  The only thing really that spoilt the drive was a very high take-up point for the clutch.  This made smooth driving a little difficult at times - at least for me anyway!

Would I buy a Megane?  Not in 1.6 litre petrol form - the engine is too gutless and that is not even compensated by good fuel consumption.  The car is stylish and in some ways very likeable, and very comfortable when driving it.  But for someone like me who likes a car with performance, this car doesn't cut it.  Perhaps if I tried one of the high performance variants, then I might think differently.
