( Home → North Carolina )

The subject of this section is the western region of North Carolina, where mountains, forests and waterfalls can be found in great abundance.  I've been lucky enough to visit the region three times, to see a friend who lives there.  I hope that these pages show off just how beautiful western North Carolina is.  This is by no means a comprehensive look at all the sights, but it should give a flavour of what the region is all about.

Western North Carolina is not about heaving night life and night clubs.  Rather, it is about scenery and the countryside.  Sure, you can find night life if you want it, but I'm not sure that's the reason that you would visit the area.  Instead, you have mountains, forests, waterfalls and any amount of opportunity to get close to nature.  Plus, you have the sheer friendliness of the locals and the welcome they afford you as you set out on exploring this region of the USA.

Towns

This region of North Carolina has many delightful towns to visit.  I hope I'm not being unfair, but none of the towns I visited had anything special to recommend them.  Instead, they were useful centres for gaining information and for hanging out when walking trails became too much effort.  A friendly welcome is always guaranteed though, whatever your reason for visiting.

Recreation

Western North Carolina has a proliferation of places to just hang out and enjoy the scenery.  These range from simple picnic areas that are set up in places of natural beauty, through to exhibitions and museums that show off the lifestyle of the region, both in the present day and in days gone by.

Forests and Mountains

Western North Carolina is host to the Appalachian mountains and numerous forests.  The Blue Ridge mountain range constitutes the main range of mountains in the Appalachians, and the Dupont state and Pisgah forests are two of the major forests in the region.   Besides these, countryside and secluded areas of greenery are never hard to find.

Waterfalls

The waterfalls are perhaps the best-knows attraction in this region of North Carolina.  I read somewhere that the region has over 250 waterfalls, though you will only find a small selection here.  Some are easy to come by, whereas others are more hidden and require you to do some hiking before you find them.
