Sheena was a labrador who came to our family as a six week old puppy in 1981. She was brought in to be a friend to Sally, who was young and a bit of a tearaway.
Although there are no photographs here to prove it, Sheena was absolutely mad about chasing balls, and would go to great lengths to get people to throw things for her to retrieve, just as one might expect from a labrador retriever. The photo below (featuring a younger version of me and my brother Rob) was probably taken with someone holding out a ball to get Sheena's attention!
Throughout her life, Sheena was bullied by Sally. Sally was a very dominant dog, and always tried to be 'leader of the pack'. Like all labradors, Sheena was very sensitive to the mood of people and animals around her, and developed the unusual trait of clicking her teeth at Sally when she tried to bully her. Picture the situation - Sally has had a snap at Sheena (to try to put her in her place), and so Sheena tries to reply by growling, and simultaneously snapping her teeth at Sally, producing a rapid clicking sound!
Unfortunately, at the age of six, Sheena developed a heart problem which meant that she had to be put to sleep at this very early part of her life. Worse, the problem was not originally diagnosed correctly (by Lane and Murray in Kenilworth), and so a problem that could have been cured was allows to develop to an incurable state. Sheena is sadly missed, but Penny proved to be a more than adequate replacement.
Final picture: Sheena having fun in the snow. She didn't have that much fun during her life, but she loved cold weather and playing in snowy conditions.
